Former NBC anchor Brian Williams waited until after the 11th hour to lay out the Democrats’ 2024 campaign strategy, calling the party out of touch with reality.
“It is a difficult time of love for the Democratic Party. I think it should be taken down and rebuilt,” the former “11 O’clock” host told Seth Meyers on his late-night show Wednesday, adding that a change of party leadership may be in order.
It’s unclear why Williams waited to weigh in on the state of the Democratic Party until after Election Day, when Vice President Kamala Harris was attacked, losing the popular vote and the Electoral College to President-elect Donald Trump.
Democrats also lost control of the Senate while Republicans retained control of the House.
“I want to know who thought it was a good idea for Joe Biden to stick around for four more years at 80 years old and 37 percent approval rating,” the talking head said.
He went on to attack the Biden administration for gaslighting Americans on issues like the economy and the border, telling Meyers that would mean “insulting” blue-collar voters that Democrats desperately need.
“I think it’s insulting when members of the working class — which the Democratic Party has completely lost in our lifetime — insist that the economy is doing well,” adding that a 12-pack of Bounty paper towels now costs consumers about $40.
“Rich people don’t feel that. Poor people already switched to Sparkle during the lockdown,” he said cheekily, referring to the bargain brand.
“I think the biggest unforced error of the Biden administration so far was the border. Telling people it’s not a problem is insulting.”
Under the leadership of Biden, Vice President and supposed “border czar” Kamala Harris, and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Customs and Border Patrol has recorded nearly 11 million illegal encounters with immigrants at the U.S. border since when Biden took office.
That number is less than the 3 million registered in the four years before that, when President-elect Trump was serving his first term.
“For the working class to see migrants arriving with welcome bags, debit cards and motel rooms is also insulting. So there’s a lot of work to do,” Williams said.
Williams, 65, left MSNBC and NBC News in 2021. In October, he was announced as the anchor for Amazon Prime Video’s special election night coverage.
In 2015, NBC News suspended the anchor in disgrace for numerous lies about his experiences covering the Iraq War, falsely claiming he was in a helicopter that was shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade.
